Cocolo is a dynamic musical troupe with a supple structure that allows its members to stack the deck for each individual performance – a limber formation suited to a group of prolific musicians who have their irons in multiple musical fires.

The vivacious Carla Louw takes the lead on vocals and percussion, joined by Jonny Dosé who astounds with his skill on both acoustic and electric guitar. Depending on the nature of each gig, they may also be joined on stage by Marné Gelderbloem who teases tantalizing tunes from the double base, ukulele to add a sultry dimension to the performance.

Cocolo derives its moniker from an amalgamation of onomatopoeic inside jokes and more or less refers to the slightly offbeat, very energetic nature of its members. As for the music itself, audiences can get ready for a smooth, spicy blend of both original and covered funk and folk that traipses down melodic country lanes and delights with unexpected dashes of good ole’ swing. In short – the kind of music that goes well with cold beer and hot nights.

Empire Alight was conceived mid-2014 by four like-minded professional musicians with the idea of bringing something fresh and unique to the Cape Town music scene.

The band focuses on having a modern repertoire with songs that aren’t overplayed but that are still relatable to their audience by developing their own arrangements and takes on various genres of modern and classic hits.

They strive to keep their performance as organic as possible, while being able to interchange between quieter, intimate acoustic sets with percussion, or rocking out fully plugged for occasions that call for it. Most importantly they enjoy having fun on stage and sharing that connection with their audience by creating a good musical atmosphere.
